Carla is beginning her cancer journey. In April 2026, Carla found some lumps during a self-examination and went in for a mammogram. A biopsy result gave her a diagnosis of triple negative Brest cancer (TNBC). It is a rarer and more aggressive form of cancer. Because of her diligence in doing self-checks, she caught it early and is currently in Stage 1. She has months of appointments, chemotherapy, and surgery ahead of her. Carla’s husband battled (and survived) cancer 20 years ago, and Carla’s sister was recently diagnosed with breast cancer as well. Cancer is no stranger in the Avis home.
Despite her diagnosis, Carla continues to be a cheerful, loving mother of 3 grown children, a son-in-law, and a daughter-in-law. Her favorite thing to do is to spend time with her 4-year-old grandson. She enjoys craft nights with her girlfriends and hosting family parties. Even the smallest occasion is a cause for celebration in Carla’s eyes if it means her family is all together under one roof. She loves scrapbooking and collecting memories together in books for her kids.
Carla loves dining at Applebee’s, purple, the musical “Wicked,” and is currently painting rocks for her rock garden in her backyard. Her favorite thought to keep her positive in this trial is: “Just because the big is happening doesn’t mean the small stops.” Carla is a joyful, humble soul and is incredibly grateful for the opportunity to join the Hopebox Family.
